Ecosmic

The challenge

More than 30000 pieces of space junk larger than 1 centimetre have already been detected and one can only imagine how many smaller, undetected pieces are on orbit. Because of the growing number of space missions, this number is expected to increase exponentially in the upcoming years. The probability of their collision with operational spacecraft keeps increasing with time and avoiding collisions is becoming a task that satellites operators cannot tackle anymore from ground: there is a need for automated and enhanced on-board collision avoidance capabilities.

The solution

SAFE (System to Avoid Fatal Events) is the solution: it is a software that delivers more accurate collision probability compared to traditional algorithms, while extending the type of encounters that can be simulated. It allows ground operators to make better decisions for avoidance manoeuvres while decreasing the amount of collision warnings that they receive every day.

Mission

The mission of Ecosmic is to enable the long-term safety and sustainability of space activities, by producing leading-edge technology that will safeguard operational satellites against the threat of collision with space debris and other spacecraft.
